The pauper pampered emperor

I wonder whether to get angry or feel dejected at the brazenness of Air India employees in their negotiations with government where they have hold every one but them responsible for the sorry state of the airline.

The first & the best airlines of India when jrd was in the cockpit is now a gone case. Due to high costs & poor service the airline is the choice of last resort for any one who pays the fare from his pocket.

It is overstaffed.Yet despite poor productivity the employees are paid the king’s ransom. Yet when the time to bite the bullet has come the government without the baggage of left is dragging its feet over taking some really tough decision.

I am not a fan of BJP but the airline was put on the block by BJP& but for the last minute string pulling by mr George Fernandez would have been sold to a strategic investor.

Ironically instead of taking a tough decision the government is thinking of denying any new licenses to airline aspirants, in the process killing the competition & providing no incentive to the employees to perform.

Of course the customer will be the sufferer in the end. This is the same airline which was snatched by govt from jrd. When TATA wanted to launch a new airline in collaboration with Singapore airline the govt killed the project forcing TATA to withdraw their application as they refuse to please the powers to be.

The same Ratan Tata is being requested now to head the panel being formed to overhaul the airline. I will not be surprised if Mr Tata politely declines as it will be a waste of his time as also an insult to him.

For none of the tough measures suggested by the panel will see daylight. The report will be buried in some obscure corner & the airline will remain an albatross around the exchequer’s neck.
So much for good governance.

How can you call this brazenness of employees? Don't you find any fault in administration? Why does administration want the employees to remain silent on their wrong practices.

It is the right of workers to oppose any attempt by the government and Air India administration to curb their rights. Making trade unions and bargaining with the employer for better working conditions is their legal right.

employees are under worked & over paid
the airline has survived due to mainly govt support now when competition is there
the govt can not keep throwing public money in a black hole
the best course is still a fire sale if that is not possible & the airline has to bleed then employees also have to make sacrifices to keep their job being a significant stock holder
if the airline is shut down other airlines will prosper due to over capacity customers will get seats
govt will save lots of money but no freebie for neta babu

Selling the Air India built with people's hard earned money can never be solution to this problem. There is need to change the mindset of employees as well as administration. Take the example of BSNL. It's competing with the private players in the Telecom sector very well.

i know the working of bsnl a bit
corruption is said to be rampant
the results conceal more than they reveal
the service is nothing much to write home about
any broadband user will vouch for it so is every mobile user
i wonder why there is resistance to privatization
after all with labor friendly laws no management can exploit staff
the answer is that there will be no free lunch
people will have to perform or perish
& the free loaders will not have it easy
need i say more?

Labour friendly laws in globalization? In which world are you living? The only motive of big business houses is to make profit and for that they can never support the stringent labour laws. It's only the unity of workers that can safe guard their interests.

organized labor never had it so good
black sheep can be every where but any dynamic business house takes care of its people

I don't know whether you are living in India or some where else. Life in unorganized sector is better than in organized sector. What a joke? Don't you know the inhumane life the workers of the unorganized sector are living in India?

Hi Shiv,
I can understand your cure PRIVITISATION ”. But you seem to think the employees who are paid (not ransom ) as you say but as per similar pay in private airlines are under worked. You are correct about overstaffing and under working but that is not the problem of employees but of ADMINISTRATION.
You are unaware that AIRINDIA is run not from Mumbai but from Delhi Rajiv gandhi Bhawan.
You donot know corruption in purchase of aircrafts.
You donot know corruption in purchase of spares.
You donot know how calls and FAX float around to commercial department at Mumbai from Delhi asking them to UPGRADE their economy to firstclass.
You donot know how calls and Fax float to Air India office in Newyork and London to give FREE LAYOVER TO SOME VIPS in 5 star hotels.
The airline is run on subsidy given by Government in the form of FULL FARE PAYING GOVERNMENT SERVANT WHO ARE FORCED TO TRAVEL BY AIRINDIA.
Why this AirIndia is promoting FOREIGN LIQUOUR AND GOODS AND NOT QUALITY INDIAN GOODS LIKE OTHER NATIONS?
